Men’s soccer falls to CIU in final minutes

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 20, 2021) – The Point University men's soccer team looked to hand Columbia International University its first loss of the season Wednesday evening, but after 88 minutes of intense competition, the Skyhawks surrendered a goal and lost 1-0 inside River Bowl Stadium.

Point and CIU played a close match, although the Rams outshot the Skyhawks 13-10 and 10-5 on shots on frame. Appalachian Athletic Conference goal leader Jeronimo Leguizamon led Point with four shots, three on goal. Julio Gomes had a stellar performance in goal with eight saves.

It was an intense 180 minutes of action that saw a combined 38 fouls, seven yellow cards and three ejections. Point played a man down for nearly the entire second half and held the Rams scoreless until they also were playing a man down.

The Rams goal came after a corner kick from Lucas Galdino found Rafael Carneiro at the top of the box, who fed the ball to Eduardo Igor, who scored the game-winning goal.

The Skyhawks only have four games remaining in the regular season and only one more road gamePoint's's final road game of the season will be on Friday, Oct. 22, as the Skyhawks travel to Kentucky Christian for a 6:30 p.m. matchup. Point will then return home for its final three games of the season, first facing Union on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2:15 p.m.
