Late surge, not enough for Skyhawks against Tennessee Wesleyan

ATHENS, Tn. (Nov. 30, 2022) - The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Wednesday evening for their Appalachian Athletic Conference away contest against Tennessee Wesleyan University and fell 62-51.

The Bulldogs got the scoring started quickly going on a 7-0 run to start the game in the first four minutes. Javier Turner got the first bucket of the game for the Skyhawks with his jump shot and drew a foul. Turner's foul shot was good, and it was 7-3 Bulldogs lead. Jake Smith would add to the scoring with his jump shot at the 14:21 mark to make it 9-5, in favor of the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs would see a lot of shots go there way from this point on, as they would score 20 more points to finish the half. The Skyhawks would get a floater to go by RJ Selman at the end of the half to make it 29-15 with Tennessee Wesylean heading to the locker room up by 14.

The Skyhawks would come into the second half with Jack Gray knocking down a three-pointer to make it 31-18 after a opening bucket from the Bulldogs. Justice Hayes would get a steal and assist on the jump shot by Jack Gray to make it 34-21. The Bulldogs would continue to push their lead, as they would get a shot to go to make it a 19-point lead at 40-21 with 14:48. The Skyhawks would take a full timeout and would get a jump shot coming out of the timeout by Alvaro Mendez to make it 40-23. Mendez would make a free throw and two possessions later, would land a three-pointer to make it 43-27. The Skyhawks would go on a 6-0 run after two made free throws from Gentrell Taylor and two layups by RJ Selman to make it 50-35 with 7:58 left in the contest. Sam Rees was found wide open by Gentrell Taylor for the three that was good to make it 54-39 at 6:01. Ergys Muhametaj would add two points with his layup to make it 54-41 at the 3:58 mark. Sam Rees would make it a 12-point game with his three ball to bring the Skyhawks closer at 56-44 with 2:50 left in the game. RJ Selman would cut the lead to ten with his jump shot and getting his foul shot to go to make it 58-48. Sam Rees would cut it to nine points with going 1 for 2 at the charity stripe with the score 58-49. Gentrell Taylor would go up strong to the basket and make it 58-51 with his layup. The Bulldogs would get fouled twice in the last seconds of the game and would extend their lead by eleven. The Bulldogs will hold on after their defensive rebound after a missed Skyhawks three attempt and win the game 62-51.  

In the box 

Sam Rees led all Skyhawks in scoring with his 10 points, while also adding four rebounds. RJ Selman and Gentrell Taylor both added nine points in the contest.

The Skyhawks shot 28.6% (18-63) from the floor, 25% (4-16) from three-point land and 61.1.% (11-18) at the charity stripe.
