Reeves leads Point to win over Johnson

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 11, 2021) – Senior Ray Reeves scored a career-high of 25 points Thursday evening, leading the Point University men's basketball team to a 70-66 victory against Johnson University (Tenn.) inside Douglas Karnes Arena.

Point advances to 4-2 on the season with Thursday's win and 2-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

Game flow

Johnson jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead before Reeves connected for a 3-pointer to give Point its lead of the night (8-6) with 15:29 remaining in the half. The Royals battled back and took a 14-13 lead following a triple from Johnson's Gavin Grubb, but a jump shot from RJ Selman tipped the scales back in Point's favor as the Skyhawks went ahead 15-14. Jake Smith and Gentrell Taylor would extend Point's lead out with back-to-back 2-pointers before Reeves connected for his third 3-pointer of the night, sending Pont ahead 22-14. Reeves closed the half out with back-to-back triples to help send the Skyhawks into the half leading 30-23. Reeves entered the break with 15 points.

The score remained close for the entirety of the second half, with Point holding its lead the entire time. The Skyhawks' largest led of the half was nine points after a made layup for Corey Bowen with 13:49 left in the half. The Royals made it a one-possession ball game seven times in the half, with their final threat to take the lead coming in the last minute of action. A dunk by Bowen with 49 seconds left put the Skyhawks ahead 66-59, but the Royals would answer by scoring the game's following four points, cutting Point's lead down to three. With 14 seconds remaining, the Royals brought the game within one from a tip-in by Jahson Dennis, but back-to-back made free throws from Reeves would help Point extend its lead back out to three and help diminish Johnson's threat.

Reeves led all scorers, going 8-for-18 from the field and 7-for-15 from distance, and recorded four assists. Selman followed with 16 points and six rebounds, and Bowen recorded 14 points with seven rebounds. Gentrell Taylor nearly clinched a double-double with nine rebounds and eight points.
