Skyhawks make big statement in AAC opener

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 9, 2021) – Five members of the Point University men's basketball team found their way in the double-digit scoring column Saturday evening to lead the Skyhawks in a dominating 97-64 victory against St. Andrews University in its Appalachian Athletic Conference opener.

The Skyhawks were led by senior Corey Bowen with 18 points shooting 6-for-8 from the field. He was followed by RJ Selman who recorded 12 points and five assists. From there, Lorenzo Freeman, Javier Turner, and Ray Reeves all finished the game with 10 points. Freeman was able to clinch a double-double by adding 10 rebounds to the stat sheet.

It was a close match early on until the Skyhawks were able to go on a run extending their lead to double-digits, starting with a three-pointer from Jack Gray. From there Point would not look back as they dominated St. Andrews for the rest of the game, not letting their lead diminish under 15 points. Point would extend their lead out to as many as 22 in the first half, off a 3-pointer by Selman. The Skyhawks would enter the second half ahead 48-26, with Bowen leading the way with 10 points.

In the second half, Point would use an 8-2 run to increase their lead out to 28. The Knights would work their way back to only trail by 23 early in the half, but the Skyhawks would answer back with an 11-5 run to increase their lead to 29. Point's late half run began off a layup by Nichaune Jones and extended to 30 points off a made free-throw by Gentrell Taylor.

With Saturday's win, Point advances to 3-2 on the season.

The Skyhawks will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 11, in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup at Johnson University (Tenn.) Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
