Skyhawks win 10-6 in AAC series opener with Johnson

WEST POINT, Ga. (April 1, 2022) — Dillon Brown, Jackson Bush and Jakobe Smith accounted for three hits apiece, and Cole Brown had another solid outing on the mound to help the Point University baseball team win 10-6 in their Appalachian Athletic Conference series opener with Johnson (Tenn.).
After a quick top of the first, the Skyhawks' offense went straight to work, posting three runs in the bottom of the frame. Jakobe Smith scored Dillon Brown off a double to right field and Jackson Bush followed with a 2-RBI double.
An inning later, Jhamante Woods connected for his seventh home run of the season, and Smith doubled to center field to score D. Brown to help the Skyhawks take a 5-0 lead. The Skyhawks would add a run in the third off a sacrifice fly from Alex Marquand that scored Bush and a run in the fourth following a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Bush that brought D. Brown home (7-0).
In the top of the fifth, Johnson got their first run across off a Skyhawk error, but Point answered back in the bottom of the sixth with its second 3-run inning of the night to extend its lead 10-1. Point's scoring began with a wild pitch that allowed Smith to score, followed by an RBI groundout that scored Connor Varnum. Bush then drove in his fourth run of the game with a single to right field that allowed Smith to score.
The Royals would attempt to make a late-game comeback, as Johnson scored five runs over the last three innings, but their efforts fell short.
D. Brown scored four times, went 3-for-3 and reached base all five at-bats, as he was hit by pitch his first two at-bats. Smith was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored twice, and Bush was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Varnum, Francisco Garcia, Kevin Howard and Woods each recorded a hit.
C. Brown got the start and earned the win going seven innings, giving up six hits, two runs (one earned), walking three and striking out five.
The Skyhawks (17-14, 12-4 AAC) return to action tomorrow as they face Johnson in the doubleheader portion of the series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. in West Point.
