Point falls to NCAA Division II opponent Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. (March 2, 2022) – The Point University baseball team traveled to face NCAA Division II opponent Columbus State, who is currently No. 9 in the NCAA Division II rankings and fell to the Cougars 21-3 Wednesday afternoon at Burger King Stadium.

Columbus held Point scoreless in the top of the first before posting four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-0 lead. In the top of the third, Kole Sonnier reached on a walk and stole second to get in scoring position. With two outs, Jakobe Smith scorched one down the right field line to drive Sonnier home and cut into the Cougars' lead 4-1. This, however, was as close as the score would get, as Columbus went on to score seven runs in the bottom of the inning, to go ahead 11-1.

In the top of the fourth, a bases-loaded walk to Jaysen Dower would bring home and a fielder's choice would allow Kevin Howard to score to make the score 11-3. The Cougars scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and two runs in the sixth and held the Skyhawks scoreless.

The Skyhawks combined for four hits, with Howard leading the way, going 2-for-2. Smith and Jeff Rice accounted for one hit apiece.

Up next, Point travels to Bluefield University for an Appalachian Athletic Conference series beginning Friday, March 4. The Skyhawks and the Rams will play the doubleheader portion of its series on Friday, with game one scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and will play the single game on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
