Baseball suffers sweep to Patriots

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2022) – The Point University baseball team finished off its series with No. 11 University of the Cumberlands Saturday afternoon and fell to the Patriots 11-1 and 13-1.

Late scoring dooms Skyhawks in game one

The Cumberlands took an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first, but an infield single from Dillon Brown would score II Zadod Gabriel in the bottom of the second to even the score 1-1. After a scoreless third inning from both sides, the Patriots would retake its lead with a run in the top of the fourth. In the top of the sixth, the Patriots were able to post five runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead and added to their lead in the seventh, with four runs, to go ahead 11-1.

The Patriots were able to get the Skyhawks out in order in the bottom of the seventh for the run-rule to go into effect.

D. Brown and Kevin Howard led Point's offense, going 2-for-3, with Brown recording Point's only RBI. Cole Brown got the start and suffered the loss, going 5.1 innings, giving up nine hits, seven runs (five earned), walking one and striking out eight.

Patriots carry momentum over to game two

Cumberlands went right back to work in game two, as the Patriots took an early 10-0 lead, scoring two runs in the top of the second and eight runs in the third. Cumberlands added on three more runs in the fifth to go ahead 13-0, but a single to left field from Kole Sonnier would bring home Alex Marquand in the bottom of the inning to help the Skyhawks get a run on the board and avoid the shutout.

Point recorded four hits, with Gabriel, Marquand, Jaysen Dower and Sonnier recording one hit apiece.

Up next

Point will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 22, as they travel to face Faulkner University at 6 p.m. Point will open Appalachian Athletic Conference play following Tuesday's game by hosting in-state foe Reinhardt Feb. 25-26.
