Brown, Skyhawks defeat Toccoa Falls, 11-8

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 15, 2022) – Dillon Brown went 3-for-3 with three RBI's and the Point University baseball team defeated Toccoa Falls 11-8 Tuesday afternoon in a nonconference game in West Point.

Brown nearly went for the cycle as he started the day off with a leadoff home run, followed by a triple his next at-bat and a single his third. Brown was then hit by a pitch his fourth time at the plate and walked his fifth at-bat.

Skyhawks storm back after early Toccoa lead

The Screaming Eagles put up three runs to start Tuesday's contest off, but the Skyhawks quickly worked their way into the lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning, one run in the second and three runs in the third. Brown started Point out with a solo leadoff home run and an infield groundout would score Kole Sonnier to help the Skyhawks cut Toccoa's lead down to one (3-2). In the second, an infield single by Sonnier scored Brown to tie the score 3-3.

In the bottom of the third, a passed ball would bring home Francisco Garcia to give Point its first lead of the game and a double up the middle by Brown would score Jackson Bush and Alex Marquand to extend Point's lead out 6-3. In the top of the fifth, Toccoa brought the score back within one, but in the bottom of the inning, a solo home run from Bush, an RBI single by Sonnier and a sacrifice fly by Jakobe Smith would extend Point's lead out to four (9-5).

Two innings later, Smith extended Point's lead with a 2-run home run to make the score 11-5. The Eagles attempted to make a late-game comeback, scoring a run in the top of the eighth and two runs in the top of the ninth, but Ben Beasley was able to record the final out of the game on a strikeout to help secure the victory for Point.

In the box

Nine Skyhawks accounted for 14 of Point's hits. Brown was the only Skyhawk to record three hits but was followed by Sonnier, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI's, Bush, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Connor Varnum was 2-for-3. Smith finished 1-for-4 with three RBI's. Salter Greene got the start and victory for Point, as he went 5.0 innings, giving up six hits, five runs (all earned), walking three and striking out six. Chase Raines pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up three hits, one run (earned), walking three and striking out three. Beasley recorded the save, throwing the final inning, giving up two hits, two runs (both earned), walking one and striking out one.

The Skyhawks will be back in action this weekend, Feb. 18-19, as they host No. 11 Cumberlands. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. and Saturday will feature only one game with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
