Baseball splits day two in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (Feb. 12, 2022) – The Point University baseball team finished their trip to Mobile on Saturday, facing Campbellsville and Mobile again. The Skyhawks defeated Campbellsville in game one 1-0 before falling to Mobile 11-8 in game two.

Game one: Point- 1 Campbellsville- 0

It was a pitcher's duel in game one as both sides combined for three hits, two walks, one run and 17 strikeouts. That run favored the Skyhawks as Jakobe Smith reached on a walk, stole second and an error from Mobile's first base would allow Smith to score. Smith's run in the bottom of the first would be the only run to come across home plate for either team.

Point's lone hit came from Francisco Garcia in the bottom of the sixth.

Cole Brown got his second start of the season and tossed a complete game shutout gem, going 7.0 innings, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out 12.

Game two: Point- 8 Mobile- 11

The Rams were poised to put Saturday night's matchup with the Skyhawks away with ease, as Mobile connected for a grand slam in the first inning and held a comfortable 8-2 lead entering the fourth. Point, however, did not allow the Rams to get off so easy, as the Skyhawks posted six runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at eight.

The Skyhawks would bat around, with Dillon Brown leading off with a walk. Smith would reach base on a walk and Woods would load the bases with a walk as well. Garcia would get hit by a pitch with bases loaded to reach first and score Brown. Alex Marquand would follow with a double down the left field line, scoring Jhamante Woods and Brett Campbell, who pinch ran for Smith. Marquand's hit would follow with a pitching change for Mobile. Jackson Bush would be the first batter that Mobile's Jaden Brown would face and he would earn a walk to load the bases once again. With the Skyhawks down by two, Connor Varnum would hit a double down the left field line, scoring Garcia and Marquand and a ground out to the shortstop from Jaysen Dower would bring home Bush to tie the game at eight.

In Mobile's half of the inning, the Rams went straight to work at deflating Point's momentum, as double to right field from Mobile's Tucker Musgrove would score Jared Whittle, and a throwing error would allow Trevor Wells and Musgrove to score. The Rams would take a 3-run lead, and Point could not perform the comeback.

Seven Skyhawks accounted for seven hits, with Garcia, Marquand and Varnum accounting for two RBI's apiece.
