Men's soccer tops Point, stays unbeaten in AAC

BARBOURVILLE, Ky . - Though happy a string of ties has kept his team unbeaten in Appalachian Athletic Conference play, Union men's soccer assistant Jack Smith was blunt when stating his goals going in the coming weeks.

"We need to get wins," Smith said.

On Saturday, Smith and everyone else in the Bulldog program got their wish. Ruben Fahiya had a goal and an assist and the Union defense pitched a shutout, topping Point (Ga.) 2-0 in an AAC matchup.

After landing a corner kick with under a minute to play in the first half, Union took advantage, as Fahiya was able to find an opening off an assist from Christopher Samuels, making it 1-0 just 52 seconds before halftime.

After the Skyhawks missed several scoring chances in the second half, Union made them pay. Fahiya nearly had his second goal of the night in the 74th minute as his open shot bounced off the cross bar. Luckily, teammate Paulo Carvalheiro Daniel was there to clean up, scoring what proved to be the final goal of the evening, as the defense held strong for its second shutout of the year.

The win moves the Bulldogs to 2-0-3 in AAC play, as they are one of just three teams without a loss in conference. They get a stiff challenge on Wednesday, when 24th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan (1-1-2), comes to Wiliamson Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
