CIU, Milligan Advance to Double-Elimination Round of Baseball Tournament

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – There were only two games in the 2023 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Baseball Tournament on Tuesday, and they were very contrasting.

In the opener, pitching and defense ruled as No. 10 seed Columbia International walked it off in the ninth to defeat seventh-seeded Point. Meanwhile, No. 9 seed Milligan cracked up the offense in downing No. 8 seed St. Andrews 15-1 in seven innings.

Columbia International and Milligan now move on to the double-elimination portion of the tournament, while Point and St. Andrews are eliminated.

Play resumes Wednesday at 9 a.m.

COLUMBIA INTERNATIONAL 3, POINT 2

Down 2-1, Point tied the game in the top of the ninth on a Kaleb Podger run-scoring double.

The Rams had two on with one out in the bottom of the ninth when James Lovera singled through the right side of the infield, allowing Emmanuel Maldonado to score the game-winner.

MILLIGAN 15, ST. ANDREWS 1

Milligan's offensive came out in full force and scored a 15-1, seven-inning victory over St. Andrews.

Jaden Steagall got things rolling with a three-run home run in the second inning to make it 3-0. St. Andrews scratched out a run in the bottom of the second. However, Milligan tacked on a run in the third, three more in the fourth, six in the fifth, and a run in each the sixth and seventh in posting the 14-run win.

Braden Spano finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and a double. Caleb Berry also drove in four RBI in going 3-for-5 with a double.

Schedule will be finalized following the results of Game 13 and 14. If only one game, it will be played at 2 pm. If there one 'if necessary' game is needed, it will be played at 11 am with the championship game at 3 pm. If both 'if necessary games are needed, the games will be played at 11 am, 2 pm, and 6 pm.
