KINGSPORT, Tenn. - It was anything but chalk on the first day of the 2022 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Volleyball Tournament as both lower seeds came out victorious on Thursday.

No. 10 seed Johnson moved past No. 7 seed Truett McConnell in four sets, while ninth-seeded Union swept No. 8 seed Point.

The tournament is being held at the MeadowView Marriott Convention Center & Conference Resort in Kingsport, Tenn.

Sydney Smith and Hannah Lukey each posted double-doubles in guiding Johnson to the 3-1 win. Smith delivered 20 kills and 16 digs, while Lukey notched 44 assists and 16 digs. Truett McConnell won the first set 25-19, but Johnson stormed back to take the next three 25-14, 25-17, 25-22.

Raquel Kessler came through with a double-double of her own in leading Union in the 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 sweep of Point. The senior hitter logged 15 kills and 11 digs to go along with three blocks and one ace.

Play resumes Friday with four matches beginning at 11 a.m.
