Football drops heartbreaker at Point

VALLEY, Ala. - Another Appalachian Athletic Conference road game brought about another gut punch loss for the Union football team Saturday.

Quinn Vega kicked a go-ahead 31-yard field goal with 2:39 to play and an ensuing Bulldog drive stalled out at the Point 33, as the Skyhaws pulled out a 16-13 victory.

Union's final drive started strong, with quarterback Myron Norfleet hitting Isaiah Johnson and Marshall Metten for 11 and 10 yards on consecutive plays, and extended when Norfleet found Tony Norman for 10 yards on 3rd-and-4, moving the ball to the Skyhawk 33.

But that's would be as far as it got. Just outside of field goal range, Norfleet was pressured and sailed a pass just beyond the reach of Isaiah Johnson on third down. The duo failed to connect again on the ensuing play, pushing Union to an 0-7 record (0-2 in the AAC.)

The loss also comes on the heels of a disappointing 27-26 loss to St. Andrews in the league opener two weeks ago.

Union scored the game's first 10 points on a 29-yard Justin Spear field goal and a 10-yard Taji Jackson touchdown run, and held its first halftime lead (10-6) of the season.

The defense recorded six tackles for loss, but ran out of gas at the end, as the Skyhawks finished with a 13:41 advantage in time of possession.

Adam Cheney and Laron Mugashee led the team with nine and eight tackles respectively. Hunter Blevins added a sack while Zion McCray, who earned AAC Defensive Player of the Week honors two weeks ago, recovered two fumbles.

Union is back home for the first time in four weeks next Saturday, hosting Bluefield (Va.) at 6 p.m.
