Volleyball falls short in a road matchup versus Bryan College

DAYTON, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2022) - The Point University volleyball team returned to the court for a road matchup against Bryan College Friday night in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup and suffered a sweep 3-0. 

(Play by play 25-21, 27-25, 25-23) 

The Lions started the first in dramatic fashion with a 9-3 lead on their home court. The Skyhawks shook off the early rust by taking advantage of attack errors from Bryan College along with attacking to the net to cut the lead to four. The Lions retaliated with their offensive power from Alison Knop and Abby Rector to bring the lead back to eight points. Coming from the timeout, Point found their rhythm with extra kills led by Sarah Baucham, Whitney Ward and Sameily Marquez to bring the game back to life for the Skyhawks. Point continued to cook up a comeback, now only trailing 23-20. The run fizzled out as the Lions added two final kills to take the first set. 

Bryan College started the second set with a 4-1 run, but the Skyhawks quickly brought the game to a tie with a kill from Baucham, a service ace from Jordan Palmer and Keylany Matos adding a kill. Both teams traded points until the Lions took a 6-1 run to extend take the lead along with being ahead by eight. Point would not go away easily as a block by Jadakate Judkins, and Sameily Marquez added some momentum to their side. To add to that, the Skyhawks took the lead after a kill from Marquez. The Lions answered back by tying the game at 23, then taking the lead from an attack error from Point. Two straight kills from the Skyhawks gave Point the lead again to bring the score 25-24. Bryan College elevated with two kills of their own to take the lead, then capitalized from an attack error to win the second set. 

Coming into the third set, The Skyhawks fired on all cylinders by going on a 7-2 run to force Bryan to call a timeout. The Lions followed up with three straight kills to now trail by two. Bryan College continued to trim Point's lead down by going on a 5-0 run to now lead 14-13, which led to a timeout called by the Skyhawks. Coming out of the timeout, Mya Sterling fired with a kill to bring the game 14 even. Business picked up as both teams continued to fight for momentum as Point fought to freeze the Lions in the third set. Sterling added two straight kills to bring the Skyhawks ahead by one. Bryan took advantage of two errors and added the final kill to complete the sweep on the evening. 

In the box 

Mya Sterling led the Skyhawks on the offensive end with nine kills. Sarah Baucham and Sameily Marquez added eight kills of their own. On the defensive end, Paige Lowe and Jordan Palmer combined for 34 digs between both players. Lowe also added 32 assists serving as the anchor on offense.
