Women’s tennis falls to UWG in season opener

VALLEY, Ala. (Feb. 11, 2022) – The Point University women's tennis team opened its 2022 season Friday afternoon, hosting the University of West Georgia at the Sportsplex in Valley, and fell to the Wolves 3-4.

The Skyhawks started their day with two wins in doubles competition, with Sofia Villalobos and Andrea Ovejero Fernandez winning at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. The Wolves forfeited at No. 3 doubles to help the Skyhawks earn an early 1-0 lead.

In singles competition, Ovejero won at No. 2 singles in a super tiebreaker after falling 5-7 in the first set, winning 6-2 in the second set and 12-10 in the tiebreaker. The Wolves forfeited at No. 6 singles but went on to win the other four singles matches to take the 4-3 advantage. Liza McKenzie nearly pulled off the victory for Point, as she fell 2-6 in the opening set but bounced back and won 6-0 in the second set but 6-7 (3) in the third set.  

Up next, the Skyhawks open Appalachian Athletic Conference play as they travel to in-state foe Reinhardt on Friday, Feb. 18, for a 2 p.m. match.
