Skyhawks' home opener spoiled by Mobile

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sep. 8, 2022) – The Point University women's soccer team returned to the pitch in River Bowl Stadium for their home opener Thursday night against the University of Mobile and fell 5-2.

Twenty-one minutes into the match, the Rams scored the first goal and followed with another goal 15 minutes later to make the score 2-0. As halftime neared, Point showed signs of life, with Tamia Jones connecting for a goal to make it 2-1.

In the second half, Mobile cranked up their defensive intensity with four saves at the start of the period to stop Point from making it a tie game. Resulting from that, the Rams added two goals to push the lead further from reach for the Skyhawks. With five minutes left in the game, Jones scored her second goal for Point, making the score 4-2. With the match concluding in the final 30 seconds, Mobile tallied its last goal. 

Point took 12 shots with 10 on goal, and Jones led the way with two goals. In goal, Erica Burkhardt recorded 12 saves. 

The Skyhawks return to play at River Bowl Stadium to open Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
