Skyhawks fall short to GGC despite late goal

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 12, 2021) – The Point University women's soccer team hosted a tough Georgia Gwinnett College in a nonconference match Tuesday evening at River Bowl Stadium. Although it was an intense match, the Skyhawks could not pull off the win and fell to the Grizzlies 2-1.

With the loss, the Skyhawks' overall record falls to 4-7-1.

Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Grizzlies would strike first with a goal by Lena Balck assisted by Addie Adame, in the 26th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Adame would score the Grizzlies' second goal off of a penalty kick. The Grizzlies limited the Skyhawks to only four shots in the first half and entered the break leading 2-0.

Both teams displayed a solid defensive front as both teams struggled to find the back of the net in the second half. With less than three minutes remaining, the Skyhawks avoided the shutout after a corner kick by Josseline Rodriguez connected with Savana Schill, who headed the ball and Jasmine Mathis was able to connect and head the ball into the net. Despite the late-game momentum, the Skyhawks were unable to make a comeback.

Seven Skyhawks took shot attempts, with Vanessa Lara leading the way with two shots. In the fight, Erica Burkhardt recorded eight saves on 10 shots on goal by the Grizzlies.

Up next, the Skyhawks will prepare for Appalachian Athletic Conference play as they host Montreat University on Saturday, Oct. 16. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
