Women’s lacrosse falls to Montreat in final home game of the season

WEST POINT, Ga. (April 2, 2022) – The Point University women's lacrosse team hosted Montreat College Saturday afternoon in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup and fell to the Cavaliers 22-9 in the Skyhawks' final game of the season inside River Bowl Stadium.

Montreat got out to a hot start, as the Cavalier scored 11 goals and limited Point to three in the opening frame. Point's first three goals were all scored by Kaelyn Geathers.

In the second quarter, Kelli Grimsley scored the first goal of the quarter before Montreat connected for five goals to enter the second half leading 16-4.

Point's offense would get hot in the third quarter, as Sydney Hanna connected for the first goal of the half and was followed by Grimsley and Geathers to cut Montreat's lead down to nine (16-7). With 2:52 left in the quarter, Montreat would extend their lead back out to 10 goals before Victoria Cortes would connect for her first goal off a free position shot with 54 seconds left (17-8).

In the final frame, Montreat would come out and score five goals to extend their lead out 22-8. Cortes would then connect for the game's final goal off a free position shot with three minutes left in the contest.

The Skyhawks took 24 shots with 20 on frame. Geathers led Point with four goals off nine shots, six on frame, five ground balls, and won four draw controls. Grimsley and Cortes followed with two goals, off five shots each. Grimsley's five shots were all on goal and she added seven ground balls and eight draw wins. Cortes had four shots on frame and had three ground balls. Hanna accounted for one goal and took four shots, all on frame. In goal, Kayla Bone had 12 saves.

Up next, the Skyhawks will travel to face AAC foe Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday, with game time scheduled for 2 p.m. This will be Point's final AAC game, as the Skyhawks will finish the regular season with a nonconference game at Shorter on April 9.
