No. 23 men’s tennis wins 6-1; women fall to Milligan

VALLEY, Ala. (March 19, 2022) – The Point University men's and women's tennis teams hosted Milligan University Saturday afternoon at the Sportsplex in Valley, Ala. Point earned a 6-1 victory on the men's side, and on the women's side, the Skyhawks fell 5-2.

Doubles action

The Skyhawks picked up the early lead after winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Alex Verlaguet and Guido Luna earned a 6-4 win and at No. 2 doubles, Trey Maust and Gavin Thomas won 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Santiago Speranza and Brody Millwood fell 4-6.

For the women, at No. 1 doubles, Andrea Fernandez Ovejero and Sofia Villalobos picked up a 7-6 tiebreaker win, but at No. 2 doubles Lisa McKenzie and JoAnna Gallman fell 6-2 and at No. 3 doubles, Tania Herrera and Sofia Gonzalez fell 6-0.

Singles action

At No. 2 singles, Luna picked up Point's first win, defeating Milligan's Carter Rigsby 6-2, 6-1. Verlaguet at No. 1 singles earned a 6-2, 6-4 win, Maust at No. 3 singles earned a 6-3, 6-4 win, Thomas at No. 4 singles earned a convincing 6-0, 6-3 win and Speranza at No. 5 singles won 6-4, 6-2. At No. 6 singles, Erick Cruz Manuel fell in a close match 4-6, 4-6.

On the women's side, Villalobos earned a three-set victory in the No. 2 slot, winning the first set 6-1 before falling 4-6 in the second set. Villalobos bounced back, winning the third set 6-3. At No. 6 singles, Gonzalez won in a tiebreaker in the first set, 7-6(3) and 6-4 in the second set. Ovejero took her match to three sets at No. 1 singles, winning the first set 6-4, before falling 2-6 and 6-7(2) in the third set.

Point will continue its home stretch as they host Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, March 25, and Johnson on Saturday, Match 26. The Skyhawks will play the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. on Friday and the Royals at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
