Skyhawks get first win, split the doubleheader

EMERSON, Ga. (February 4, 2023) – The Point University baseball team played a double header on Saturday, against St. Andrew's and Cumberland at LakePoint Sports Complex. The Skyhawks would split the day with a 7-6 walk off win in Game 1 against St. Andrew's and loss 7-6 in Game 2 against Cumberland.

Game 1 (St. Andrew's) 7-6 WIN

The Knights would put up a five-run spot in the top of the second to take an early 5-0 lead. The Skyhawks would get their first run of the game in the bottom of the second when Noah Watkins would hit a triple to score Jhamante Woods to make it 5-1. The Knights would add another run in the top of the third to make it 6-1.

The fifth inning saw the Skyhawks cut the lead to 2 runs. The scoring started when Zavion Anderson tripled to score Demetrius Foster and Adam Barnett to make it 6-3. Slade Mink would later reach on a fielder's choice and snag an RBI when Zavion Anderson would be called safe at the plate to make it 6-4.

The sixth inning saw Adam Barnett reach on a fielder's choice and Alex Marquand hit an absolute no doubter homerun to right field to make it a tie ball game at 6-6.

Carson Curry and Sage McWaters came up huge out of the bullpen, pitching 4 innings after Cameron Seiwert was relieved after the third inning. McWaters would work to four batters and get out of it without allowing a run in the top of the seventh to keep the game tied at 6-6.

The bottom of the seventh saw Jackson Bush walk to start the inning. Bush would advance to second on a passed ball to second base. Slade Mink would make the first out of the inning after a failed bunt attempt that was popped up. Zeb Baird was the pinch hitter after Mink and would be hit by pitch to put two runners on. Sam Baker would come in to pinch run for Baird at first base. After a strike out by Noah Watkins, Jaysen Dower would walk to load the bases with two outs. Adam Barnett would hit a single to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh to score Jackson Bush and give the Skyhawks their first victory at 7-6.

Alex Marquand (2-3, with 2 RBIs, R, BB and HR), Zavion Anderson (2-3, with 2 RBIs, R, BB) and Adam Barnett (2-4, with RBI, 2 R, and game winning single) would be the offensive leaders.

Point had 7 runs, 8 hits and committed 2 errors.

Winning Pitcher – Sage McWaters (1-0)

Losing Pitcher – Taylor Barfield (0-1)

 

Game 2 – (Cumberland) 7-6 Loss

The Skyhawks would get the scoring started early with three runs in the bottom of the first. The scoring got started on a ground ball to the second basemen by Kaleb Podger to score Zavion Anderson to make it 1-0. Slade Mink would single to drive in two runners, Jackson Bush and Alex Marquand to make it 3-0. The Phoenix would get their first run in the top of the second when Gene Aberoutte would hit D. Dalton with the bases loaded to make it 3-1. The top of the third would see T. Holyk hit a two run homer for the Phoenix to tie the game at 3-3.

After the third inning, Gene Aberoutte would exit the game and make way for reliver, Cole Brown. Brown would pitch a scoreless fourth and fifth inning for the Skyhawks. The bottom of the fifth, the Skyhawks would take a 6-3 lead after pushing three runs across the plate. Slade Mink walk to score JR Curley after the bases were loaded to make it 4-3. Zeb Baird would reach on a fielder's choice to score Jackson Bush to make it 5-3. Sam Baker would hit an RBI single to score Kaleb Podger to give the Skyhawks a 6-3 lead.

Cole Brown would see the Phoenix hit back-to-back jacks to make it a tie ball game after the two-run homerun and the solo homerun. Brown would pitch out of the sixth inning, but would give way to Chandler Griggs for the top of the seventh after the Skyhawks were unable to score in the bottom of the sixth.

The Phoenix would take a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh after a passed ball. The bottom of the seventh saw the first two Skyhawk batters go down before Chase Tolbert reaching first base on an error by the pitcher. After a Jeremiah Martin entered the game as a pinch runner, Sam Baker would fly out to left field to end the game. The Phoenix would leaver Emerson, Ga with the 7-6 victory over the Skyhawks.

Slade Mink and Sam Baker would both finish the game with two hits.

Point had 6 runs, 7 hits and committed 1 error.
